Backlink.
Learn what Backlink means in modern search and SEO.
An inbound link from one website to another, serving as a vote of confidence that influences search engine rankings.
A backlink is a hyperlink from one website that points to another. In search engine algorithms, backlinks function as votes of confidence—if authoritative, relevant sites link to your page, it signals to search engines that your content is trustworthy and valuable. Backlinks remain one of the most powerful ranking factors in Google's algorithm, over 25 years after PageRank first used them as its core signal.
Not All Backlinks Are Equal
Backlink quality matters far more than quantity. A single link from a major news outlet, government site, or authoritative industry publication can be worth more than hundreds of links from low-quality directories or article farms. Key quality factors include: the linking domain's authority (DA/DR), the relevance of the linking page's topic, the placement of the link (editorial vs. sidebar), and the anchor text used.
Building and Monitoring Backlinks
Backlink acquisition strategies include digital PR, broken link building, creating linkable assets (research, tools, data), guest posting, and partnerships. Backlink monitoring using tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Majestic tracks new and lost links, identifies toxic backlinks requiring disavowal, and reveals competitor link-building patterns worth replicating.
