Breadcrumb Schema.
Learn what Breadcrumb Schema means in modern search and SEO.
Structured data that marks up the hierarchical navigation path of a page, enabling Google to display breadcrumbs in search results.
Breadcrumb schema (BreadcrumbList structured data) marks up the navigational trail from a site's homepage to the current page—e.g., Home > SEO Tools > Rank Tracking. When implemented correctly via JSON-LD, Google can display this trail in the organic listing's URL line instead of the raw URL, improving readability and click-through rate.
SEO Benefits of Breadcrumb Markup
Breadcrumbs displayed in SERPs make the site's structure immediately understandable to users—they can infer the page's context and the broader section it belongs to before clicking. This context typically increases CTR for category and subcategory pages. Breadcrumbs also reinforce internal linking hierarchy and help Googlebot understand site architecture.
Implementation Requirements
Each breadcrumb item in the JSON-LD array requires a `@type: ListItem`, a `position` (sequential number), a `name`, and an `item` (URL). The URL in breadcrumb markup must match the page's actual crawlable URL structure. Inconsistencies between the on-page visual breadcrumbs and the structured data markup can cause Google to ignore the markup.
