A buyer persona (also called a marketing persona or customer avatar) is a detailed, semi-fictional representation of a specific type of customer or stakeholder your business serves. Based on real customer research and data, a persona includes demographic characteristics, professional context, goals, pain points, information sources, objections, and decision-making factors—giving marketing and sales teams a concrete 'person' to design campaigns and content for.

Components of an Effective Buyer Persona

A useful buyer persona includes: background (job title, experience, company type, typical career path); demographics (age range, education level, income—B2C relevant); goals (what they're trying to achieve professionally/personally); pain points (what problems cause them to seek solutions); information sources (which publications, communities, influencers, and formats they trust); objections (common reasons they don't buy); and a day-in-the-life narrative that makes the persona feel real.

Using Personas in Practice

Buyer personas should directly inform: content strategy (what topics, formats, and channels does this persona engage with?); messaging (what language, pain points, and benefits resonate?); channel selection (where does this persona spend time?); and SEO keyword strategy (what does this persona search for at each stage of the journey?). When teams disagree on content or campaign direction, asking 'what would [Persona Name] find valuable?' provides a shared framework for decisions.
