Click Depth.

Learn what Click Depth means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginEnglish click (a navigation interaction) + depth (distance from origin); site architecture and technical SEO metric

The number of clicks required to reach a page from the website homepage, a key indicator of how easily crawlers and users can access content.

Click depth is the number of clicks a user (or Googlebot) must make from the homepage to reach a specific page. A page at click depth 1 is directly linked from the homepage; click depth 4 requires navigating through three intermediate pages. Click depth directly affects both user discoverability and the distribution of link equity through the internal link graph.

Click Depth and Crawl Frequency

Google correlates click depth with perceived page importance. Pages at click depth 1-2 are crawled frequently; pages at click depth 5+ are crawled less often and receive less PageRank flow. A flat site architecture — where no important content sits more than 3 clicks from the homepage — maximises crawl efficiency and distributes authority more evenly.

Reducing Click Depth

Strategies to reduce excessive click depth: improve breadcrumb navigation (each breadcrumb level adds an internal link path), create topic hub pages that aggregate related content, add contextual internal links from high-authority pages to deep content, and audit category structures to ensure subcategories don't nest unnecessarily deep.

Click Depth vs. URL Depth

URL depth (the number of forward slashes in a URL: /category/subcategory/page) is often confused with click depth. URL depth is a structural indicator; click depth is a navigational one. A page can have high URL depth but low click depth if it is directly linked from many high-level pages, and vice versa.
