Data Layer.

Learn what Data Layer means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginEnglish data (information) + layer (stratum, level)

A JavaScript object (typically `window.dataLayer`) that passes structured data from a website to tag management systems like Google Tag Manager.

A data layer is a JavaScript object — conventionally `window.dataLayer` in Google Tag Manager implementations — that stores structured information about the current page and user interactions. Tags read from the data layer instead of scraping the DOM, making tracking implementations more reliable and maintainable.

Data Layer Pushes

Events are communicated to GTM via `dataLayer.push()` calls, each containing an `event` key (the trigger name) and any associated variables (e.g., `ecommerce.purchase.transaction_id`). GTM listens for these pushes and fires tags configured to react to specific event names.

E-Commerce Data Layer

Google's Enhanced E-Commerce and GA4 E-Commerce specifications define a standard schema for product impressions, detail views, add-to-cart, checkout, and purchase events. Following these schemas ensures compatibility with GA4's built-in e-commerce reports and third-party tools that expect standard field names.

Developer Handoff

The data layer is the contract between developers and marketers. A data layer specification document — listing every event, its required variables, and example push objects — allows developers to implement tracking without knowing analytics tools, and analysts to configure tags without understanding the codebase.
