Email Marketing.

Learn what Email Marketing means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginElectronic mail + Latin: mercatus (market, trade)

Direct communication with customers and prospects via email to nurture relationships, promote content, and drive conversions.

Email marketing is the practice of sending targeted, personalised messages to an opted-in list of subscribers to achieve marketing goals—building relationships, educating prospects, re-engaging inactive customers, promoting offers, and driving conversions. Despite being one of the oldest digital channels, email consistently delivers the highest ROI of any marketing channel, averaging $36–42 return per $1 invested.

Email Marketing Channels and Formats

Email marketing formats include: newsletters (regular updates for engaged subscribers); drip campaigns (automated sequences triggered by user actions); promotional emails (sale announcements, limited-time offers); transactional emails (order confirmations, receipts, password resets); re-engagement campaigns (targeting inactive subscribers); and behavioural emails (triggered by specific actions like cart abandonment, product views, or milestone dates).

Deliverability and List Health

Email deliverability—whether messages reach the inbox vs. spam folder—is the foundation of effective email marketing. Key deliverability factors include: sender reputation (IP and domain reputation based on complaint rates and engagement); authentication records (SPF, DKIM, DMARC); list hygiene (removing invalid, bouncing, and unengaged addresses); and sending frequency (too many emails to unengaged subscribers destroys reputation). A small, engaged list consistently outperforms a large, unengaged one.
