Funnel Analysis.

Learn what Funnel Analysis means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginDutch funnele (funnel vessel) + Greek analysis (unloosening)

The process of measuring how users progress through defined steps toward a goal, identifying where the most sessions drop off.

Funnel analysis tracks how users move through a defined sequence of steps—viewing a product page, adding to cart, entering checkout, completing payment—and measures the conversion and drop-off rate at each step. By visualising where users abandon the journey, funnel analysis identifies the highest-impact optimisation opportunities in a conversion flow.

Setting Up Funnel Analysis in GA4

GA4's Funnel Exploration report allows custom funnel definition using any combination of events, page views, or user properties as steps. Funnels can be open (allowing entry at any step) or closed (requiring sequential completion). Filters by device, traffic source, geography, and user segment reveal whether specific audiences face disproportionate drop-off at particular steps.

From Funnel Analysis to Action

Funnel analysis pinpoints where to focus—not what to change. A step with 60% drop-off requires qualitative investigation: session recordings, heatmaps, and user testing reveal whether the issue is UX friction, unclear copy, technical errors on specific devices, or a genuine intent mismatch between the traffic source and the page content. Funnel analysis starts the investigation; qualitative research determines the solution.
