Perplexity AI is an AI-powered answer engine that provides direct, sourced answers to user queries by searching the web in real time, synthesising information from multiple sources, and presenting a conversational response with inline citations. Launched in 2022, Perplexity has grown to over 15 million monthly active users and is considered a significant competitor to both traditional search and AI chat interfaces.

How Perplexity Works

Perplexity combines a search index (updated in real time) with large language models (including Sonar, its own model, and optionally Claude or GPT-4) in a RAG architecture. When a query is submitted, Perplexity retrieves relevant web pages, synthesises a response, and attributes each claim to its source with clickable citations displayed alongside the answer.

Perplexity for SEO and Brand Visibility

Perplexity's citation model means that sources contributing to answers receive visible attribution — a potential traffic and brand awareness channel. SEO-optimised content that is factually precise, well-structured, and covers specific questions is more likely to be retrieved and cited. Monitoring brand mentions and competitor citations in Perplexity for target queries is an emerging AI visibility practice.

Perplexity Pro and Pages

Perplexity Pro (paid tier) offers access to more powerful models, higher query limits, and image generation. Perplexity Pages is a feature for creating detailed, sourced reports from Perplexity research — used by marketers and researchers to produce AI-assisted reference documents with automatic citations.
