Programmatic SEO.
Learn what Programmatic SEO means in modern search and SEO.
Creating large numbers of SEO-optimised pages at scale using a database or template — each page targeting a specific long-tail keyword combination.
Programmatic SEO is the practice of generating large numbers of unique, indexable web pages at scale using a templated structure populated with data from a database — with each page targeting a specific long-tail keyword combination. Rather than manually writing individual pages, programmatic SEO creates them systematically, enabling a small team to capture thousands of keyword variants.
How It Works
A programmatic SEO system has three components: (1) a keyword list — often long-tail combinations of two or more variables (city + service, tool + comparison, attribute + category); (2) a database of structured data relevant to each variable combination; (3) a template that assembles the data into a unique, useful page for each keyword. Each generated page should provide genuinely unique value to the searcher.
Successful Programmatic SEO Examples
Zapier: '[App A] + [App B] integrations' — one page per tool combination. TripAdvisor: '[City] hotels', '[City] restaurants' — templated but unique by location data. G2: '[Software category] reviews', '[Software A] vs. [Software B]' — user-generated data populates unique pages. Wise: '[Currency A] to [Currency B] exchange rate' pages with live rate data.
Programmatic SEO Quality Standards
Google's helpful content guidance applies fully to programmatic SEO. Pages generated with thin, duplicated, or meaningless content are penalised at scale — and scale amplifies the negative signal. Each programmatic page must: answer a real search query with genuinely useful information unique to that page's variables, load quickly, and avoid the appearance of spam. Adding dynamic, data-driven content specific to each variable is the baseline quality requirement.
