Query Deserves Freshness (QDF).
Learn what Query Deserves Freshness (QDF) means in modern search and SEO.
Google's algorithm that detects when a query demands recent content and temporarily boosts freshly published or updated pages in rankings.
Query Deserves Freshness (QDF) is an algorithm component Google applies to queries where recency is a meaningful ranking factor. When Google detects a spike in search volume for a topic—indicating a news event, product launch, or recurring seasonal interest—it adjusts rankings to surface recently published or updated content ahead of older, established pages.
Queries That Trigger QDF
QDF activates for three main query types: breaking news and current events (election results, natural disasters, major company announcements), recurring events (award ceremonies, sports seasons, annual reports), and 'hot topics' that trend without being formal news events (viral debates, platform changes, algorithm updates).
QDF and Content Strategy
For queries with QDF components, publishing speed and update recency matter alongside quality. Publishing breaking analysis of a Google algorithm update within hours of announcement can temporarily outrank older comprehensive guides. However, QDF boosts are temporary—once the freshness signal decays, established authority and comprehensive coverage reassert their ranking advantage.
