The practice of using historical traffic data, keyword search volumes, and ranking projections to predict the future impact of SEO investments.

SEO forecasting is the practice of projecting the future organic search traffic and revenue impact of an SEO programme — either as a predictive model for investment decisions, or as an ongoing performance benchmark. It combines historical traffic data, keyword search volumes, estimated click-through rates by ranking position, and conversion rate assumptions to produce a revenue projection.

Forecast Model Components

A basic SEO forecast: (1) identify target keywords and current positions, (2) look up keyword monthly search volume, (3) apply CTR estimates by position (position 1: ~28-40%, position 3: ~10-11%, position 10: ~1-2%), (4) estimate achievable positions given current domain authority and planned link building, (5) apply site conversion rate and average order value. The output is estimated monthly organic visits and revenue at target positions.

Limitations and Uncertainty

SEO forecasts carry significant uncertainty: search volume fluctuates, algorithm changes reshuffle rankings, SERP features reduce CTR for any position, and competitive action can prevent achieving target positions. Forecasts should be presented as ranges (base case, upside, downside) rather than point estimates, with explicit assumptions clearly stated.

SEO Forecasting Tools

Google Sheets with Search Console API export is the most common approach for bespoke forecasting. Semrush and Ahrefs provide position-based traffic estimates at the current state but not future projections. Forecasting tools like Ranktank (now part of Conductor) and bespoke models built in GA4 and BigQuery provide more sophisticated attribution-linked forecast outputs.
