Share of Clicks.
Learn what Share of Clicks means in modern search and SEO.
The proportion of total organic search clicks in a category or keyword set that a domain captures, reflecting competitive organic search performance.
Share of clicks (or click share) is the proportion of total organic search clicks within a given keyword set or industry category that a specific domain receives. It is an SEO counterpart to Share of Voice in paid advertising — measuring competitive organic search presence not just by rankings but by the actual traffic captured.
Share of Clicks vs. Share of Impressions
Share of impressions (ranking in the SERP for a query) is necessary but not sufficient for traffic. A domain that ranks #7 for a high-volume keyword appears frequently but captures a small percentage of clicks (position 7 CTR ≈ 2-3%). Share of clicks weights impression share by click-through rate — a more accurate measure of traffic dominance than ranking position alone.
Measuring Share of Clicks
No single tool provides exact category-level click share without proprietary data. Estimates can be built using: Semrush Traffic Analytics (comparing estimated organic traffic across competitors for the same keyword set), Similarweb (estimated share of visits), Search Console data for own site combined with keyword volume estimates, and Ahrefs keyword position tracking with CTR curves applied.
Growing Share of Clicks
Improving click share requires: ranking higher for target keywords (position 1 captures 28-40% of clicks vs. position 7's 2-3%), winning SERP features that increase CTR (featured snippets, review stars, sitelinks), optimising title tags and meta descriptions for CTR (compelling copy that outperforms the SERP average CTR at the same position), and expanding the number of keywords for which the domain captures at least one click.
