Site Reputation Abuse.

Learn what Site Reputation Abuse means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginLatin situs (position) + Latin reputatio (consideration) + Latin abusus (misuse)

Google's term for when a reputable site hosts third-party content designed to exploit that site's authority — such as sponsored posts or payday loan pages on news sites.

Site reputation abuse is a spam policy introduced by Google in March 2024 targeting the practice of hosting third-party content — typically commercial or affiliate content — on high-authority domains with the primary purpose of exploiting that domain's ranking power for keywords the content would never rank for on its own domain. Examples include a major news site hosting a 'best payday loans' affiliate comparison page; a university hosting a third-party coupon site; or a reputable publisher selling sponsored articles without editorial oversight.

Why Google Targeted This Practice

Parasite SEO on reputable domains was growing because the PageRank and trust signals of well-established domains could instantly rank content that had no hope of ranking independently. A 'best VPN' affiliate page on a major newspaper's domain could outrank dedicated VPN review sites with years of topical authority — not because the content was better, but because the host domain's authority provided an unearned ranking advantage.

What Counts as Site Reputation Abuse

Google distinguishes between legitimate third-party content (guest posts with genuine editorial oversight, syndicated news with attribution, sponsored sections that are clearly labelled and editorially consistent) and abusive content (pure commercial affiliate content with no editorial connection to the host site's audience; white-label content resold under a trusted brand; paid content farms masquerading as editorial). The key factor is whether the host site's editorial standards apply to the third-party content.
