User Journey Mapping.

Learn what User Journey Mapping means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginOld English usere + Old French journee (day's travel) + Middle English mappen

A visual exercise that documents the steps, touchpoints, emotions, and pain points a user experiences from first awareness to conversion.

User journey mapping (also called customer journey mapping) is a UX and marketing technique that visualises the end-to-end experience a user has when interacting with a brand—from initial awareness through consideration, decision, purchase, and post-purchase. It documents touchpoints, channels, user goals, pain points, and emotional states at each stage.

Why Journey Maps Matter for Content and SEO

Journey maps reveal which queries users have at each stage and which content types serve those queries best. Awareness-stage queries are informational; consideration queries are comparative; decision queries are transactional. Aligning content strategy to journey stages ensures the right content exists for each intent, reducing drop-off between funnel stages.

From Journey Map to Content Gap Analysis

A completed journey map highlights content gaps—touchpoints where users have questions the brand has no content addressing. These gaps represent keyword targeting opportunities. Systematically filling journey-stage content gaps is one of the most reliable methods for increasing organic traffic and reducing bounce rates across the funnel.
