Web Analytics.
Learn what Web Analytics means in modern search and SEO.
The measurement, collection, analysis, and reporting of website data to understand and optimise user behaviour and business performance.
Web analytics is the practice of measuring, collecting, analysing, and reporting digital data to understand how users find and interact with a website, and to evaluate how effectively it serves business goals. The field encompasses everything from traffic volume and source attribution to user behaviour flows, conversion funnel analysis, and revenue attribution.
Core Web Analytics Platforms
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the dominant web analytics platform, offering event-based data collection, enhanced user journey tracking, predictive metrics, and cross-platform measurement. Adobe Analytics, Matomo, and Plausible are alternatives. For privacy-first analytics without cookies, tools like Fathom, Simple Analytics, and Pirsch provide aggregated insights that comply with GDPR without consent banners.
The Analytics → Insights → Action Cycle
Data without action is just cost. Effective analytics programmes create a clear cycle: measure performance against defined KPIs, identify anomalies and opportunities in the data, form hypotheses about why patterns exist, test changes (A/B tests, content experiments), measure results, and iterate. Teams that close this loop systematically consistently outperform those that collect data without systematic analysis.
