The Myth.
In ancient Greek mythology, Argus Panoptes was a giant unlike any other.
His name meant "the all-seeing one," Panoptes literally translating as "he who sees all." He was covered in one hundred eyes, scattered across his body, and possessed a power no mortal or god could match: he never fully slept. While some eyes closed to rest, others remained open and watchful.
Nothing escaped him. Nothing moved without his knowledge.
He was the ultimate guardian, the perfect sentinel, the watcher who never stopped watching.
The Task.
Hera, queen of the gods, trusted only Argus with her most important tasks.
When Zeus fell for a mortal woman named Io and transformed her into a white cow to hide her from Hera's wrath, Hera wasn't fooled. She placed Argus as Io's guard, knowing that one hundred eyes meant Io could never escape unnoticed.
No matter which direction Io moved, some set of eyes was always watching.
The Fall.
Zeus, desperate to free Io, sent the god Hermes to deal with Argus.
Hermes sat beside him and played music, slowly, quietly, and told stories so long and so dull that one by one, all one hundred eyes grew heavy.
One closed. Then another. Then another.
For the first time in his existence, Argus Panoptes fell fully, completely asleep.
Hermes slew him.
The Ascension.
