AI Agent.
Learn what AI Agent means in modern search and SEO.
An autonomous AI system that uses a language model to plan and execute multi-step tasks — calling tools, APIs, and other models — to achieve a goal without step-by-step human direction.
An AI agent is software that uses a large language model as its reasoning core, then takes actions in the world: calling APIs, browsing the web, querying databases, or running code. Unlike a chatbot, which generates text in response to a prompt, an agent can plan a multi-step sequence, decide which tool to use at each step, and react to the results.
In SEO and marketing contexts, AI agents are increasingly used for tasks like competitive research, content drafting, technical audits, and outreach. But agents have hard limits — they cannot crawl authenticated areas of a site, run real Lighthouse audits in a true browser, or verify rankings without an integration. Confusing what an agent CAN do with what it APPEARS to do is one of the most common AI literacy gaps in 2026.
