A prompting and reasoning pattern that asks a language model to work through a problem step by step before giving the final answer.
Chain of thought reasoning produces better results on multi-step problems by breaking them into explicit intermediate steps. Newer reasoning models (like o1 and Claude 4) do this internally — they "think" before responding.
For content marketers, chain-of-thought-style prompts produce more rigorous outputs: "First list the assumptions, then evaluate each, then conclude" outperforms "Answer this question." The technique also surfaces the model's reasoning, making hallucinations easier to spot.
