Chain-of-Thought Prompting.

Learn what Chain-of-Thought Prompting means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginOld English: chæne (chain, series) + Old English: þoht (thought) + Latin: promptus (ready)

A prompting technique that instructs AI models to show their reasoning step by step before reaching a conclusion.

Chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting asks an AI model to work through a problem step by step, showing its reasoning process before delivering a final answer. Rather than jumping straight to a conclusion, the model articulates intermediate reasoning steps—mimicking the way humans think through complex problems.

Why It Works

CoT prompting consistently improves LLM performance on complex reasoning tasks. By externalising the reasoning process, the model is less likely to make logical leaps that lead to errors. It also makes the reasoning transparent and auditable, allowing users to identify where the model's logic went wrong.

Marketing Applications

Chain-of-thought prompting is useful for complex content strategy tasks: analysing a SERP to understand why certain content ranks, evaluating keyword intent, creating detailed content outlines, or reasoning through which topics to address in a pillar page. Asking the model to 'think step by step' before answering typically produces more accurate and nuanced results.
