Click-Through Rate Optimisation (CTRO).

Learn what Click-Through Rate Optimisation (CTRO) means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginOld English clincan + Latin trans (through) + Latin ratus (reckoned) + Latin optimus (best)

The practice of improving the percentage of users who click on a search listing, ad, or email by optimising titles, meta descriptions, and visual elements.

Click-Through Rate Optimisation (CTRO) is the systematic effort to increase the percentage of users who click on a listing—organic SERP result, paid ad, email subject line, or social post—when it is displayed. In organic SEO, CTRO focuses on crafting title tags and meta descriptions that are compelling, relevant, and clearly differentiated from competing results.

SERP CTR Optimisation Techniques

Effective organic CTR optimisation includes: placing the target keyword early in the title tag, adding power words or numbers ('7 Proven Methods', 'Complete Guide'), using meta descriptions as a value proposition rather than a summary, aligning the title's promise with search intent, and winning structured data rich results (star ratings, dates, breadcrumbs) that make the listing visually distinctive.

CTR as a Ranking Signal

Google's systems use user engagement signals—including CTR relative to the position average for a query—as quality signals. Pages with significantly higher-than-average CTR for their position can receive ranking boosts; pages with poor CTR may drop. Monitoring GSC's CTR column by query allows identification of pages ranking but not earning clicks—high-priority CTRO candidates.
