Organic Traffic.

Learn what Organic Traffic means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginEnglish organic (naturally occurring, not paid) + traffic (website visitors); SEO outcome metric

Visitors who arrive at a website by clicking unpaid search engine results — the primary output metric of SEO programmes.

Organic traffic is the flow of website visitors who arrive by clicking on unpaid (non-sponsored) search engine results — including standard blue-link results, featured snippets, image results, and video results. It is the primary outcome metric for SEO programmes and the most cost-efficient traffic source at scale, since it compounds over time rather than stopping when a budget runs out.

Measuring Organic Traffic

GA4 segments organic traffic using the 'Organic Search' channel in the Traffic Acquisition report. Google Search Console provides impression and click data directly from Google's search index — more accurate for Google-specific organic traffic than GA4's session-based attribution. Both tools should be used together: Search Console for Google-specific query and ranking data, GA4 for downstream behaviour and conversion measurement.

Organic Traffic Quality

Not all organic traffic is equal. Traffic from informational queries at the top of the funnel converts at lower rates than traffic from commercial investigation queries (e.g., 'best SEO platform for agencies') or transactional queries (e.g., 'Aergos pricing'). Segmenting organic traffic by landing page, keyword intent cluster, and conversion rate reveals which organic traffic is most valuable — informing content prioritisation.

Organic Traffic vs. Paid Traffic Comparison

The value of organic traffic is often compared to its paid equivalent. If 10,000 monthly organic visitors from a keyword cluster would cost $50,000/month in Google Ads CPC to replicate, the organic traffic has an estimated $50K/month avoided media value. This comparison helps stakeholders understand the compounding asset value of SEO investment relative to ongoing paid media spend.
