SEO ROI.

The return on investment from SEO activities, calculated by comparing the revenue attributable to organic search against the cost of SEO programmes.

SEO ROI is the return on investment from search engine optimisation activities — comparing the incremental revenue or profit generated from organic search against the cost of the SEO programme (agency fees, tool costs, content production, developer time). Demonstrating SEO ROI is one of the most important and most challenging tasks for SEO practitioners and agencies.

SEO ROI Calculation

Basic framework: (Revenue attributed to organic conversions − SEO programme cost) ÷ SEO programme cost. Example: $500K organic-attributed revenue − $50K programme cost = $450K return ÷ $50K cost = 9x ROI. The key challenge is attributing revenue to organic search accurately — especially in multi-touch, long sales cycle B2B contexts.

The Attribution Challenge

Organic search revenue attribution is complicated by: last-touch attribution undercounting organic (a user may first find the site via organic, then convert via a direct visit or email), dark social and offline touchpoints in the B2B journey, branded vs. non-branded split (branded organic may have converted regardless of SEO investment), and the difficulty of proving counterfactual ('what would traffic have been without the SEO programme?').

Proving SEO ROI to Stakeholders

Best practices: establish a pre-programme baseline (organic sessions, conversions, revenue) for year-over-year comparison; correlate ranking improvements with traffic and conversion changes; calculate the equivalent Google Ads CPC value of organic traffic (organic traffic at scale often represents $5-50K/month in avoided paid search spend); and use incrementality testing where possible (compare periods when SEO activity was high vs. low).
