Conversational UI.
Learn what Conversational UI means in modern UI and product design.
An interface pattern built around text or voice dialogue between the user and the system — chatbots, voice assistants, AI agents, customer support widgets.
Conversational UI replaces buttons and menus with natural-language dialogue. Users type or speak what they want; the system responds, asks clarifying questions, or takes action. ChatGPT, Siri, support chatbots, and most AI agent products use conversational UI as their primary interaction model.
When It Wins
Conversational UI excels at open-ended tasks where the user can't easily predict what options to look for, complex workflows that would require deep menu traversal, and accessibility scenarios where typing is easier than navigating visually. It struggles when the user knows exactly what they want — typing a question is slower than clicking a known button.
Design Considerations
Good conversational UIs blend chat with traditional UI affordances — quick-reply buttons, attached cards, structured forms inline with messages. Pure-text-only chat is rarely the best pattern; most successful conversational products show the user options and shortcuts alongside the dialogue.
