Dwell Time.

Learn what Dwell Time means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginOld English dwellan (to delay) + Old English tima (time)

The amount of time a user spends on a page after clicking a search result before returning to the SERP — a behavioural signal Google may use to assess content quality.

Dwell time is the duration between a user clicking a search result and returning to the SERP. It is distinct from time-on-page (which analytics tools measure) because it specifically captures the return to Google — implying the user did not find what they needed. Long dwell time suggests the content satisfied the query; short dwell time (leading to pogo-sticking) may signal the content was irrelevant or poor quality.

Dwell Time as a Ranking Signal

Google has never confirmed dwell time as a direct ranking factor. However, patents and statements from former Googlers suggest that user satisfaction signals — of which dwell time is one proxy — do influence how Google refines rankings over time. Regardless of whether it is a direct signal, long dwell time correlates strongly with content that genuinely satisfies search intent, which is the goal of SEO.

Improving Dwell Time

Match content precisely to search intent so users find what they expected. Open with a strong hook that validates the click. Use clear headings and formatting that let users quickly find relevant sections. Embed supporting media — images, videos, comparison tables — that extend reading time naturally. Internal links to genuinely related content extend session time without feeling forced.
