Exact Match Domain.
Learn what Exact Match Domain means in modern search and SEO.
A domain name that exactly matches a target keyword — like bestplumbers.com for the keyword 'best plumbers' — which once provided significant ranking advantages that Google has since diminished.
An Exact Match Domain (EMD) is a domain name that matches the target keyword exactly or very closely — such as cheap-car-insurance.com targeting 'cheap car insurance' or bestplumbers.com for 'best plumbers'. In the early days of search engine optimisation, exact match domains provided significant ranking advantages because keyword presence in the domain was a strong ranking signal. Google's EMD algorithm update in 2012 specifically targeted and devalued low-quality exact match domains.
EMD Algorithm Update (2012)
Before 2012, registering cheap-car-insurance.com gave an immediate ranking boost for that query regardless of the site's content quality. This led to a proliferation of exact match domain spam. Google's EMD update penalised low-quality sites with exact match domains, removing the unearned advantage while preserving ranking benefit for high-quality EMDs with genuine content. Well-established, authoritative sites with exact match domains still benefit from keyword signals in the domain, but it is no longer a shortcut.
Modern EMD Strategy
Today, exact match domains carry mild ranking benefit when combined with genuinely high-quality content and strong authority. The keyword-in-domain signal is one of dozens of signals, not a dominant one. Brand considerations now typically outweigh keyword optimisation in domain selection: a memorable, brandable domain (Stripe, Slack, Notion) builds more long-term value than an exact match domain with limited brand potential. Partial match domains — domains that contain a keyword but also a brand name — are the pragmatic middle ground.
