A triggered behaviour that detects when a user is about to leave a page and displays a targeted message or offer to retain their attention.
Exit intent technology detects signals that a user is about to leave a page—typically cursor movement toward the browser's close button or address bar on desktop, or rapid scroll direction changes on mobile—and displays a targeted overlay, popup, or bar in response. The goal is to present a compelling reason to stay, convert, or provide contact information before the user leaves.
Exit Intent Use Cases
Effective exit intent applications include: offering a discount or free shipping for e-commerce cart abandonment; displaying a lead magnet offer for content site visitors about to exit without subscribing; presenting a comparison guide for product page visitors about to leave; asking for feedback about why the user didn't convert; and highlighting a key benefit or differentiator the user might have missed. The message should be relevant to what the user was doing on the page.
Exit Intent Best Practices
Exit intent should be used judiciously—overuse creates a poor user experience. Best practices: show each visitor the exit intent overlay at most once per session; personalise the offer based on what the user viewed (someone leaving the pricing page should see a different message than someone leaving a blog post); A/B test different offers and copy; ensure the mobile implementation is unobtrusive; and suppress the overlay for users who have already converted.
