Facebook Ads (Meta Ads).

Learn what Facebook Ads (Meta Ads) means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginProper noun Facebook + Latin advertere (to turn to)

Paid advertising across Meta's platforms—Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the Audience Network—using detailed demographic and interest targeting.

Facebook Ads (now part of Meta Ads Manager) is the advertising platform for Meta's family of apps—Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the Audience Network. Advertisers create campaigns targeting users by demographics, interests, behaviours, custom audiences, and lookalike audiences, across formats including image, video, carousel, collection, Stories, and Reels ads.

Facebook Ads and the Digital Marketing Mix

Facebook Ads is particularly effective for brand awareness, demand generation, and retargeting because it reaches users based on who they are rather than what they are searching for. Combined with Google Search (which captures existing demand), Facebook Ads creates demand by reaching relevant audiences before they search—making it an upper and mid-funnel complement to search advertising.

Post-iOS 14 Meta Ads Landscape

Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework, introduced in 2021, significantly limited Meta's ability to track iOS users across apps. Meta's response included the Conversions API (server-side event tracking), Aggregated Event Measurement, and Meta's own AI-powered Advantage+ audience and campaign products that rely less on individual-level tracking and more on modelled attribution.
