FAQ Schema.
Learn what FAQ Schema means in modern search and SEO.
Structured data markup that marks up question-and-answer pairs on a page, enabling Google to display them as expandable rich results in SERPs.
FAQ schema (FAQPage structured data) marks up a page containing a list of questions and answers using JSON-LD. When Google validates and displays this markup, it can show expandable question-and-answer pairs directly below the organic listing in search results—increasing the listing's visual footprint and potentially improving click-through rate.
Google's Restrictions on FAQ Rich Results
Google updated its FAQ rich results policy in 2023, limiting FAQ rich results to government and health websites for most queries. For general websites, FAQ schema still helps Google understand page content and may surface answers in People Also Ask boxes, even without a full FAQ rich result. Implementing FAQ schema remains worthwhile for topical context even without guaranteed rich result display.
FAQ Schema vs HowTo Schema
FAQ schema (`FAQPage`) is appropriate for pages with a list of Q&A pairs where the questions and answers are known in advance. HowTo schema is appropriate for step-by-step instructional content with defined steps and tools. Both types inform People Also Ask population and help Google extract relevant content for AI Overview answers.
