Hashtag Strategy.
Learn what Hashtag Strategy means in modern search and SEO.
A deliberate approach to selecting and using hashtags on social media posts to maximise discoverability and audience reach.
A hashtag strategy defines which hashtags to use on social content, how many per post, and how to mix broad (high-volume) and niche (high-relevance) tags to achieve the best balance of reach and relevance. Hashtags serve as discoverability signals on Instagram, TikTok, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn.
Hashtag Tiers
Effective strategies typically tier hashtags by size: a small number of very large hashtags (millions of posts) for exposure, a majority of mid-size tags (tens to hundreds of thousands of posts) for competitive but relevant reach, and a handful of branded or niche-specific tags where the account can own the conversation.
Platform Differences
Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags; research suggests 5–10 well-chosen tags outperform 30 generic ones. TikTok hashtags function more like content category signals that feed the recommendation algorithm. LinkedIn rewards 3–5 professional hashtags. X hashtags increase visibility but heavy tagging often appears spammy and reduces engagement.
