Hreflang.

Learn what Hreflang means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginHTML attribute: hreflang = hypertext reference language. Greek: hyper + Latin: textus + Old French: reference + langue (language)

An HTML attribute that tells search engines which language and region a page is intended for, enabling correct targeting for international websites.

Hreflang is an HTML link attribute (`<link rel='alternate' hreflang='en-gb' href='...' />`) used to specify the language and optionally the geographic region a page targets. For websites serving multiple languages or regional variants, hreflang tells search engines which version to show users based on their language preference and location—preventing the English (US) version from appearing to UK users, or the Spanish version from showing to Portuguese speakers.

Implementing Hreflang Correctly

Hreflang implementation requires that every page in a group references all language/region variants, including itself. If a page references six language variants, all six pages must reciprocally reference each other. Missing reciprocal references invalidate hreflang tags. Implementation can be via HTML `<head>`, HTTP headers, or XML sitemap. Common errors include incorrect language codes (use ISO 639-1 + ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 format: 'en-GB', 'fr-FR', 'es-MX'), missing self-referencing tags, and inconsistent canonicalization.
