Keyword Gap.
Learn what Keyword Gap means in modern search and SEO.
Keywords that competitors rank for organically but your site does not — representing content opportunities revealed through competitive keyword analysis.
A keyword gap is the set of keywords for which one or more competitors rank in organic search but your site does not appear — or ranks significantly lower. Keyword gap analysis is the foundational input for content strategy decisions: it shows where competitors are capturing traffic you could be earning.
How to Perform a Keyword Gap Analysis
In Ahrefs (Content Gap) or Semrush (Keyword Gap): enter your domain and 2-4 competitor domains. The tool outputs keywords where competitors rank in the top 20 but you do not. Filter by: keyword difficulty (start with low-to-medium KD for faster wins), search volume (minimum viable traffic threshold), and relevance (topically aligned with your product or service).
Prioritising Keyword Gaps
Not all keyword gaps are equal. Priority gaps: keywords relevant to your core offering, with sufficient search volume, where competitors' ranking content is thin or outdated (indicating an opportunity to rank with superior content), and where a single new page could target multiple related gap keywords (a cluster, not one-to-one).
Keyword Gap in Niche vs. Competitive Markets
In a mature, highly competitive niche, keyword gap analysis reveals where established brands have blind spots — speciality topics they haven't addressed. New entrants can use these gaps to build topical authority in underserved subtopics before competing for high-volume head terms. In emerging or niche markets, keyword gap analysis against any content that exists helps build the initial keyword universe from scratch.
