A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites created and controlled by a single entity for the purpose of building artificial backlinks to a target 'money site' to manipulate its search rankings. PBNs typically use expired domains with existing link authority to pass PageRank to the target site while disguising the artificial nature of the link scheme.

How PBNs Work

An operator purchases expired domains with existing domain authority (and often, existing backlink profiles), installs basic CMS installations with thin content, and publishes posts with links back to the money site. The expired domains pass their inherited authority to the money site through these artificial editorial links — mimicking the appearance of organic link acquisition.

Google's Detection and Enforcement

Google actively detects PBN footprints: shared hosting IP ranges, similar site structures, overlapping WHOIS or registrar information, content freshness patterns, and unnatural link velocity from the network. Detected PBNs result in manual actions against the money site — often a complete de-indexing. Google's link spam systems are increasingly automated, catching PBN patterns in real time.

Risk vs. Reward

PBN-based rankings are inherently unstable — any algorithm update or manual review that detects the network destroys the rankings built with it. The cost of building or purchasing a PBN, the ongoing maintenance burden, and the existential risk of penalty make PBNs a poor ROI compared to legitimate link building (digital PR, broken link building, resource page outreach) that produces durable, algorithm-resistant link equity.
