Product Listing Ads (PLAs).

Learn what Product Listing Ads (PLAs) means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginLatin productum + Latin lista (border) + Latin advertere (to turn to)

Image-based paid ads showing product photo, price, and retailer name in Google Shopping results, powered by Google Merchant Center data.

Product Listing Ads (PLAs)—now part of Google Shopping campaigns and Performance Max—are visual paid ads that display a product image, title, price, and store name directly in Google search results and the Shopping tab. Unlike text ads, PLAs are generated automatically from a retailer's Google Merchant Center product feed rather than manually written ad copy.

PLA Targeting and Bidding

PLAs target based on product attributes in the feed (category, product type, brand, custom labels) rather than keywords typed by the advertiser. Google matches the feed data to relevant user queries. Smart Shopping and Performance Max campaigns use Google's machine learning to automatically bid and allocate budget across products to maximise conversion value.

Feed Optimisation as PLA SEO

Because PLAs are generated from feed data, optimising the feed is the equivalent of ad copywriting for PLAs. Product titles should front-load the most relevant keywords (brand + product type + key attributes). High-quality images in the required dimensions, accurate pricing, and GTIN/MPN inclusion improve both auction eligibility and click-through rates.
