Google Ads automated bid strategies that use machine learning to optimize bids for conversions or conversion value in each auction.

Smart Bidding is a subset of automated bid strategies in Google Ads that uses machine learning to optimize bids at auction time for conversions or conversion value. Strategies include Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, and Maximize Conversion Value.

How Smart Bidding Works

At each auction, Google evaluates dozens of contextual signals — device, location, time of day, audience membership, browser, language — and adjusts bids in real time. These micro-adjustments are impossible to replicate manually and form the basis of Smart Bidding's performance advantage.

Portfolio vs. Standard Smart Bidding

Standard strategies apply to a single campaign. Portfolio bid strategies share a target (e.g., a single target CPA) across multiple campaigns, allowing Google to over-bid on high-intent auctions and under-bid on low-intent ones while hitting the blended goal.

Learning Period Considerations

After switching to Smart Bidding, campaigns enter a learning period of roughly one to two weeks. Performance may fluctuate. Avoid making major changes during this window; frequent edits reset the learning clock and destabilize optimization.
