SEO Agency.

Learn what SEO Agency means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginSEO + Latin agentia (acting on behalf of another); a firm specialising in search engine optimisation services

A specialist agency that provides search engine optimisation services — strategy, implementation, content creation, and link building — to client businesses.

An SEO agency is a specialist firm that provides search engine optimisation strategy and implementation services to clients — typically on a retainer basis. Services may include technical SEO audits and implementation, keyword research and content strategy, on-page optimisation, link building, reporting, and increasingly AI search visibility management.

Agency vs. In-House SEO

In-house SEO teams have deep knowledge of a single brand, direct access to developers and content teams, and faster execution cycles. SEO agencies offer breadth of experience across industries and verticals, dedicated specialist roles (technical, content, links), established tooling and processes, and scalability (adding clients without proportional overheads). Most growing businesses use a hybrid: an in-house SEO lead managing strategy and an agency for specialist execution.

Agency Pricing Models

Retainer (most common): a fixed monthly fee for an agreed scope of work. Project-based: a one-time fee for a defined deliverable (technical audit, migration support, content brief production). Performance-based: a portion of the fee is tied to ranking improvements or organic traffic goals. Retainers are preferred for ongoing SEO work; projects suit defined deliverables.

Evaluating an SEO Agency

Evaluation criteria: demonstrated case studies with verifiable organic traffic growth, transparent reporting methodology, clearly defined scope and KPIs, no black-hat link building practices, team seniority (who does the actual work vs. who's pitching), and communication cadence. Red flags: guarantees of specific ranking positions, link packages from private blog networks, and inability to explain their process clearly.
