AI Context.
Learn what AI Context means in modern AI and large language models.
The information a language model has access to when generating a response — the prompt, attached files, retrieved documents, conversation history, and system instructions.
AI context is everything inside the model's "view" at inference time. It includes the user's prompt, any documents or URLs pulled in by retrieval, attached files, prior messages in the conversation, and the system prompt set by the application. Context is what separates an LLM with rich grounding from one that's guessing from training data alone.
For marketers, context explains why the same question can get different answers from the same model: a Perplexity query that retrieves your homepage will cite different facts than a ChatGPT browse without your page in the retrieval. Optimizing for AI visibility means making sure your most quotable passages are likely to land in the model's context window when buyers ask relevant questions.
