AI Crawler.
Learn what AI Crawler means in modern AI search.
A web crawler operated by an AI company to gather content for training datasets, real-time retrieval, or both.
AI crawlers include OpenAI's GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, Anthropic's ClaudeBot and Claude-User, Google's Google-Extended, Perplexity's PerplexityBot, and dozens of others. Each can be allowed or blocked individually via robots.txt.
Allowing AI crawlers is generally a visibility decision: blocking them means your content can't be cited in their AI products. Most B2B sites in 2026 allow the major AI crawlers because the citation traffic and brand presence in AI answers outweigh the cost of being scraped.
