AI Hallucination.
Learn what AI Hallucination means in modern AI and large language models.
When an AI model produces text that sounds confident but is factually wrong, made up, or inconsistent with the source material. Also called LLM hallucination or model hallucination.
AI hallucination — also called LLM hallucination or model hallucination — is when a generative AI system produces text that sounds confident and coherent but is factually wrong, fabricated, or inconsistent with the source material it was given. The most common forms include invented statistics, made-up citations, quotes misattributed to real people, and entirely fictional product features or tool capabilities.
Why It Happens
LLMs generate text by predicting the most probable next token, not by retrieving verified facts. They learned from training data that contained errors, gaps, and outdated information. When a model lacks reliable training data for a specific question, or when retrieval misses the right source, it tends to produce a plausible-sounding answer rather than admitting uncertainty. Confidence in the wording does not correlate with accuracy of the content.
Implications for Marketing and SEO
AI hallucinations are the single largest reputational and operational risk of AI-assisted marketing in 2026. The two most common manifestations agencies see today: client-submitted AI SEO audits with fabricated technical findings, and brand hallucinations where an AI engine invents product features, pricing, or leadership names for a real company. Both are fixable but require active monitoring.
How to Reduce Hallucination Risk
Ground every factual claim with attributed sources. Use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to give the model fresh, verified context. Add a human editorial pass for anything that names specific numbers, people, or features. Monitor your own brand monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and Gemini so you catch brand hallucinations before they spread.
