Google MUM.
Learn what Google MUM means in modern search and SEO.
Multitask Unified Model — Google's multimodal AI model that understands text, images, and multiple languages to interpret complex search queries.
Google MUM (Multitask Unified Model) is a large language model announced in 2021 that is 1,000 times more powerful than BERT by Google's estimation. MUM is designed to understand complex, multi-step tasks that previously required multiple searches — for example, 'I'm hiking Mt. Adams in September; I've only hiked Mt. Fuji before — what do I need to prepare differently?'
Multimodal Understanding
MUM processes text, images, and (in testing) video and audio simultaneously. A user can take a photo of running shoes and ask 'are these good for hiking?' — MUM interprets the image and the question together. This multimodal capability powers Google Lens enhancements and multisearch.
Language Coverage
MUM is trained across 75 languages simultaneously. It can draw on information available in one language (say, a Japanese hiking guide) to answer a question posed in English, surfacing information that would be inaccessible through traditional keyword matching.
SEO Implications
MUM reinforces the importance of topical authority and comprehensive content. Because MUM can synthesise across sources, individual pages need to demonstrate deep expertise rather than shallow keyword coverage. Content that anticipates follow-up questions — addressing the 'prepare differently' nuance — aligns with how MUM evaluates relevance.
