Search Generative Experience.

Learn what Search Generative Experience means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginEnglish search + generative (producing new content) + experience; Google product name

Google's experimental AI-powered search feature (now AI Overviews) that generates a conversational summary at the top of search results.

Search Generative Experience (SGE) was the name Google used during the 2023 Labs preview period for what is now publicly deployed as AI Overviews. SGE placed a generative AI summary above traditional organic results, synthesising information from multiple sources to directly answer queries.

Evolution to AI Overviews

SGE graduated from Google Labs to a full rollout in May 2024 under the name AI Overviews. The underlying technology — Gemini models applied to search — remained largely the same, but the branding changed to reflect the product's move from experimental to mainstream.

SGE vs. Traditional Featured Snippets

Unlike featured snippets, which pull a single passage from one page, AI Overviews synthesise content from multiple pages and add connective reasoning. This changes the citation dynamic: several domains may receive a source attribution link within the overview rather than one page claiming the prominent position.

Content Strategy Under SGE

During the SGE preview, data suggested complex, multi-part queries were more likely to trigger an AI Overview while simple informational queries often did not. Content targeting long-tail, high-specificity queries — where the AI synthesis adds genuine value — saw the most exposure. This remains true post-rollout under AI Overviews.
