Zero-Click Search.

Learn what Zero-Click Search means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginOld English zer (zero) + Old English cliccan (to click) + Latin searchare (to search)

A search that ends without the user clicking any result — because the answer is delivered directly on the SERP via a featured snippet, Knowledge Panel, or AI Overview.

A zero-click search is one where the user's query is answered directly on the search results page without any outbound click to a website. Zero-click results are delivered through features such as Featured Snippets, Knowledge Panels, AI Overviews, local packs, weather cards, sports scores, calculation answers, and definition boxes. Studies consistently show that 50%+ of searches result in no click.

The SEO Implications

Zero-click searches represent a challenge for traditional click-through-rate-focused SEO. If Google answers the query directly, the website that provided the data may receive no traffic even if its content is featured. This is especially pronounced for informational queries — definitions, conversions, simple facts — and is growing as AI Overviews absorb more query types.

Adapting Strategy

Rather than avoiding zero-click entirely, forward-thinking SEOs focus on brand impression value — being the cited source builds E-E-A-T even without a click — while prioritising non-zero-click query types: navigational queries, transactional queries, and complex informational queries that require deeper reading. Optimising for featured snippets can also be a two-edged strategy: winning the snippet provides visibility but may reduce clicks.
