Featured Snippet.
Learn what Featured Snippet means in modern search and SEO.
A highlighted search result appearing above organic listings that directly answers a query, pulled from a page's content.
A Featured Snippet is a special SERP format where Google extracts a portion of a page's content—a paragraph, list, table, or video—and displays it prominently at the top of organic results to directly answer a query. Also called 'position zero', Featured Snippets appear above the first organic result and often include the page's URL.
Types of Featured Snippets
The main snippet types are: Paragraph (a definition or explanation, 40–60 words), List (ordered or unordered, common for step-by-step queries), Table (comparisons, data, specifications), and Video (a clip answering a how-to question). Each type requires different content formatting to trigger—paragraph snippets are won by including clear, concise definitions; list snippets by using proper HTML list elements.
Optimising for Featured Snippets
To win Featured Snippets, structure content to directly answer the target question using the format that already appears for similar queries. For paragraph snippets: write a 40–60 word direct answer using the question phrase as a subheading. For list snippets: use numbered HTML lists for step-by-step content. Ensure the page ranks in the top 10 for the query first—snippets are almost exclusively won by already-ranking pages.
