SERP.

Learn what SERP means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechabbrev.OriginAcronym: Search Engine Results Page. Old French: cerchier (to search) + Latin: machina + Latin: resultare (to spring back) + Latin: pagina (page)

Search Engine Results Page — the page displayed by a search engine in response to a user query, containing organic listings, ads, and SERP features.

The SERP (Search Engine Results Page) is the page that a search engine returns in response to a query. Modern SERPs are complex compositions that may include: organic (unpaid) results, paid ads, Featured Snippets, Knowledge Panels, Image Packs, Video results, People Also Ask boxes, Local Packs, AI Overviews, and more. The exact SERP composition depends on the query type and what Google's systems determine best serves the searcher's intent.

SERP Features and Click Distribution

The presence of SERP features dramatically affects click-through rates for organic results. A Featured Snippet above position 1 can capture 8–12% of clicks before users reach the first organic result. An AI Overview can reduce overall clicks by 20–60% for certain query types. Understanding which SERP features appear for target keywords is essential for realistic traffic projections.

SERP Analysis as an SEO Tool

Analysing the SERP for a target keyword reveals: dominant intent (what content type ranks), average content quality and length, which SERP features are present, content freshness expectations, and the authority level required to compete. SERP analysis should precede every piece of content created for SEO, as it reveals what success looks like for that keyword.
