SERP Features.

Learn what SERP Features means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginAcronym (Search Engine Results Page) + Latin factura (something made)

Non-standard elements in Google's search results beyond the traditional ten blue links—including featured snippets, local packs, image carousels, and knowledge panels.

SERP features are the diverse result types Google displays beyond the traditional organic 'ten blue links'. They include: Featured Snippets (position zero answer boxes), People Also Ask (PAA) boxes, Local Pack (map-based local business results), Knowledge Panels, Image Packs, Video Carousels, Shopping results, Top Stories (news), Sitelinks, AI Overviews, and Rich Results (star ratings, recipe cards, event dates).

SERP Features and Organic CTR

The proliferation of SERP features has significantly affected organic CTR distribution. Featured snippets can capture 8–12% of clicks that would have gone to position 1. Local Packs dominate local queries, pushing organic results below the fold on mobile. Each new SERP feature added by Google redistributes click opportunity—understanding which features appear for target queries is essential to forecasting realistic organic traffic.

Winning SERP Features

Each feature has specific optimisation requirements: Featured Snippets require concise direct answers under relevant headings. Local Pack requires an optimised Google Business Profile with citations and reviews. Shopping results require a product feed in Google Merchant Center. Knowledge Panels require entity establishment through structured data, Wikipedia, and Wikidata. Structured data markup (schema.org) is the primary lever for winning rich results.
