Position Zero.
Learn what Position Zero means in modern search and SEO.
The organic search result that appears above the traditional ranking #1 position — typically a featured snippet that directly answers a user's query.
Position zero refers to the organic search placement above the traditional #1 result — most commonly a featured snippet that directly answers the query, but also applicable to knowledge panels, local packs, and AI Overviews that appear above ranked results. Winning position zero for high-traffic queries can drive significant click volume and brand visibility.
Featured Snippets as Position Zero
Featured snippets are the most common form of position zero — a boxed extract from a web page displaying a direct answer, list, table, or code block in response to a query. The page providing the snippet typically loses its standard organic position (to avoid appearing twice on the same SERP), but the snippet position receives significantly higher CTR than position #1 for question-based queries.
Does Position Zero Always Win CTR?
Position zero snippets generally receive higher CTR than position #1 for question-intent queries — users see the answer and click through for more detail. However, for simple factual questions with definitive answers (e.g., 'how many grams in a kilogram?'), the user may receive their answer from the snippet without clicking — a zero-click interaction. Position zero is most valuable for complex topics where the snippet answer prompts the user to want more.
Optimising for Position Zero
To win a featured snippet: (1) identify queries where a featured snippet is already present (competitors or other sites hold the position), (2) ensure the page ranks in the top 10 for the query (snippets are selected from pages Google already considers authoritative), (3) directly answer the query in a concise, clearly formatted block — paragraph (40-50 words), ordered list, or table — immediately after the question heading, (4) use schema markup (FAQPage, HowTo) to signal structured answer content.
