Google News is both a dedicated news aggregation platform (news.google.com) and a SERP feature that displays recent news articles at the top of search results for newsworthy queries. For publishers, Google News inclusion provides significant traffic potential for timely, news-adjacent content across politics, technology, business, health, sports, and entertainment.

Google News Inclusion

Unlike Google's main web index (where any page can be crawled and potentially ranked), Google News is a curated product with editorial standards. Publishers do not need to apply separately — eligible content is included automatically based on compliance with Google's news policies (timely reporting, author attribution, original reporting, no misinformation). Schema markup (NewsArticle, Article) and correctly configured sitemaps help signal news content.

Top Stories SERP Feature

The Top Stories carousel appears in Google Search for news-intent queries. Unlike standard organic results, Top Stories eligibility requires timely content (typically published within 24-72 hours of the query), AMP or fast-loading pages, and strong E-E-A-T signals. Top Stories results rotate frequently and are personalised by location.

Google News SEO Considerations

For news publishers: publish breaking content as soon as possible (recency is paramount), use descriptive, keyword-accurate headlines (the H1 or article title is indexed as the headline), include publication date clearly, use author markup, and maintain consistent publishing from the same domain. Changing URLs or restructuring archives can cause loss of Google News inclusion.
