Link Insertion.
Learn what Link Insertion means in modern search and SEO.
A link building technique that places a backlink into an existing published article rather than creating new content for the link.
Link insertion (also called niche edit link building) involves reaching out to the owner of an existing, already-published article and requesting that they add a link to your site within the current content. Unlike guest posting, no new article is created—the link is inserted into an article that is already indexed and may already have existing authority and backlinks.
Link Insertion vs Guest Posting
Guest posts create new content on a third-party site that contains a link. Link insertions add links to existing content. From an SEO perspective, link insertions can be more valuable because the host article is already indexed, potentially already ranking, and already receiving organic traffic—so the link appears in a page that Google has already evaluated and trusts.
White-Hat vs Grey-Hat Link Insertion
Legitimate link insertion involves finding articles where a link to your content genuinely adds value for readers—citing your research, providing a resource the author overlooked, or updating a reference that has since moved. Paid link insertion (paying publishers to add links) violates Google's link scheme policies and should use `rel='sponsored'`. Clearly distinguishing editorial from paid insertions is essential for maintaining compliance.
