Search Volume.

Learn what Search Volume means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginOld French: cerchier (to search) + Latin: volumen (roll, scroll — measure of size)

The average number of times a keyword is searched per month across a search engine, used to gauge audience size and opportunity.

Search volume is the average monthly count of searches for a specific keyword, typically reported as an average over the past 12 months. It is one of the primary data points in keyword research, indicating how large the potential audience is for a given topic. Tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs, Google Keyword Planner, and Moz pull this data from search engine APIs and clickstream datasets.

Interpreting Search Volume

High search volume isn't always better. A keyword with 50,000 monthly searches but extreme competition may be impossible for a new site to rank for, while a keyword with 200 searches per month but zero competition and strong commercial intent may be highly profitable. Volume should always be evaluated alongside keyword difficulty, competition level, intent, and expected click-through rate.

Volume Trends and Seasonality

Search volume data often masks important trends. A keyword averaging 1,000 searches per month might get 10,000 in December and 200 in June. Checking seasonal patterns—available in Google Trends and some keyword tools—helps content teams time publication, plan seasonal campaigns, and interpret month-over-month traffic fluctuations accurately.
