Search Operator.

Learn what Search Operator means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginLatin searchare (to search) + Latin operari (to work)

Special commands typed into a search engine query to filter, refine, or expand results — used by SEOs for site audits, competitor research, and link prospecting.

Search operators are special syntax commands that modify a search query to return more specific results. Google supports a range of operators used by SEOs, journalists, researchers, and power users to find information that standard search cannot easily surface. They are used for technical audits, competitor analysis, link prospecting, content research, and SERP analysis.

Commonly Used SEO Search Operators

site: (site:example.com) returns all indexed pages from a domain — useful for index coverage checks. inurl: finds pages with specific text in the URL. intitle: searches for keywords in page titles. filetype: locates specific file types (filetype:pdf). -keyword excludes a term from results. 'exact phrase' requires an exact match. related: finds sites similar to a given domain. cache: shows Google's cached version of a page.

Advanced SEO Applications

Combining operators unlocks powerful research workflows: site:example.com 'keyword' finds pages on a competitor's site mentioning your topic (link prospecting). site:example.com -site:www.example.com reveals indexed subdomains. intitle:'resources' inurl:'links' identifies resource pages for link building outreach. 'your brand' -site:yourdomain.com finds brand mentions and citations. Note: many operators have become unreliable in recent Google updates as the index has grown.
