Tool Use.
Learn what Tool Use means in modern AI and large language models.
A language model's ability to invoke external functions, APIs, or services during a conversation to take actions or fetch live data.
Tool use is what turns a chatbot into an agent. The model decides when to call a function (search the web, query a database, send an email, run code), passes the right arguments, reads the result, and incorporates it into the next response. Modern frameworks like Anthropic's MCP and OpenAI's function calling standardize how tools are described.
For SEO, tool use is the difference between an AI that "thinks" it audited your site (and hallucinates the answer) and one that actually called a real crawler, parsed real Lighthouse output, and reported real numbers.
